What coastal weather does to locks

Weather is behind many lock repair requests. Bridgeport is on the Connecticut coast, where NOAA's state climate summary puts seasonal snowfall at 30 to 35 inches, well below the roughly 50 inches of the Northwest Hills. Winters are still cold enough to hurt a lock: the state's average January temperature is 27.2°F.

• Ice in the cylinder. Meltwater from snow or rain can run into an exterior cylinder by day and turn to ice overnight. A key that turns stiffly on a cold morning is an early warning, and forcing it can bend the key or damage the pins.

Older mechanisms

Remington Village, in the Boston Avenue–Mill Hill neighborhood, is one of the historic districts that show where the city's older housing sits. Original wood entry doors in houses of that age may carry mortise locks, and a worn one can often be repaired instead of replaced. Wood doors also swell in damp weather and shrink in dry cold, which can push the latch off the strike. Adjusting the strike plate or hinges often fixes a door that latches only in some seasons.

Simple upkeep

• Use a dry lock lubricant such as graphite or PTFE rather than oil, which collects grit and thickens in the cold.
• Tighten loose handle and hinge screws before the holes strip.
• A door should close and latch without a shove; a latch that has to be forced wears out sooner.
