Fitting new hardware to old doors

About 40 percent of Bridgeport's housing units were built before 1940, according to the housing plan the city adopted in October 2023. In a house that age, lock replacement usually means fitting new hardware to an old door, not the other way around.

• Mortise locks. Original wood entry doors may hold a mortise lock, set in a pocket cut into the door edge. A replacement mortise lock sized to that pocket keeps the door intact, while switching to a modern deadbolt can mean altering the door.
• Worn hardware. A sagging handle, a latch that misses the strike or a cylinder that grinds may need only a repair. Replacement makes sense when parts are cracked, missing or no longer made.
• Postwar houses. Across Connecticut, roughly four in ten homes date from 1950 to 1979 and may still carry original hardware. A knob lock with no separate deadbolt is a common upgrade.

Stratfield, Marina Park and Barnum/Palliser

Historic districts show where much of Bridgeport's older housing sits. The Stratfield Historic District takes in about 300 buildings along Clinton, Brooklawn and Laurel Avenues, in the Brooklawn–St. Vincent and West End–West Side neighborhoods. The South End holds the Marina Park and Barnum/Palliser districts. If you want to keep an original door in one of these areas, say so and ask for a lock that fits the existing openings. A new lock with a wider trim plate can also cover marks left by the old one.
