How Florida humidity and heat treat a fob

A key fob is a small radio, usually with a coin battery. Heat and moisture shorten its working life, and NOAA describes Florida as the most humid state in the nation.

• Heat. A spare left in the console or glove box of a car parked in Jacksonville sun sits in cabin heat well above the outside air. Heat can shorten battery life and warp the case, so keep spares indoors.
• Humidity and rain. Fobs get rained on and dropped in puddles, and moisture corrodes battery contacts and circuit boards. If a fob is soaked, take the battery out and let it dry before trying it again.

What to have ready

1. Every working fob and key for the car. On some vehicles, programming a new fob erases any fob that is not present, so bring them all.
2. The VIN, printed at the base of the windshield or on the driver's door jamb.
3. Year, make, model and trim, plus the part number of any fob you already bought; not every aftermarket fob can be programmed to every car.
4. Photo ID and the registration.
