Florida is humid, and a fob that rides in a parked car through an Orlando summer, or sits in a bag on the seat, has a harder life than one kept indoors. Cabin heat can run a coin cell down sooner, and damp air can corrode its contacts.

Before paying for programming, rule out the simple causes. A fob that works only close to the car, or works one day and not the next, often needs a fresh battery or clean contacts rather than a new program. A fob that went through a downpour or a wash cycle should be opened, dried and fitted with a new battery before it is judged dead. Keep a spare fob in the house, not the glove box, where cabin heat builds and a thief would look.

Car fobs and building fobs

Most occupied homes in Orlando are rented, so many drivers carry two kinds of fob.
