Locked out on Fort Gordon

A car locked on Fort Gordon adds a gate to the problem, because anyone helping has to be admitted to the post. Visitors without DoD credentials get a pass at the Visitor Control Center by Gate 6, off Gordon Highway. Anyone 18 or older needs a Real ID or two alternate documents, and commercial vehicles use the truck side of Gate 6 for extra screening.

Put "Fort Gordon" at the top of your request and say whether you already have base access. If the lockout falls on a weekend or holiday, say that too, because the visitor center is closed then.

Heat and anyone inside

Never leave a child or pet in a locked car. If one is inside, call 911 now, before you contact a locksmith. In summer the inside of a closed car in the sun heats well past the outdoor temperature. Wait in shade or indoors nearby, not on hot pavement beside the car.

Off post, be exact about where

Downtown, a lockout might happen on Broad Street, whose National Register district runs from 5th to 13th Streets, or in a lot a block off it. Elsewhere, a road name such as Walton Way or Wrightsboro Road with no cross street or landmark leaves too much road to search. In a large lot, give the lot name and the nearest row.

• Year, make, model and color.
• Where the keys are: visible inside, in the trunk or lost.
• Whether the engine is running.
• Whether a person or animal is inside, after you have called 911.
