If it's urgent

What to tell us

Urgent lockout and lock help for homes, vehicles, and businesses, starting with a clear conversation about what is possible.

  • Your exact location and a phone number where you can be reached
  • A short description of what happened
  • Photo ID and proof of residence, ownership, or authorization, or tell us if they are locked inside

If anyone is in danger, call 911 first.

What counts as urgent

  • Someone at risk. A child, older adult or pet shut in a hot house or car is a 911 call first, before any locksmith.
  • A door that will not secure after a break-in. Call the police first, and 911 if someone may still be inside. Let officers see the damage, and photograph it yourself before anything is repaired.
  • Storm damage. NOAA says the remnants of tropical storms can reach Georgia with strong winds and heavy rain. A door knocked out of line, or a lock that no longer latches, leaves the house open overnight.
  • Locked out with something running, such as a stove or space heater, or with needed medication inside.

A lock that sticks but still works can usually wait; see lock repair.

Two things worth knowing

Landlord lockouts. The Georgia Landlord-Tenant Handbook (Department of Community Affairs, revised August 2024) says a landlord cannot remove a tenant or block access without the court dispossessory process, and calls self-help evictions illegal. In Augusta, the Marshal's Office handles evictions: after receiving a writ of possession, it schedules with the landlord and leaves a courtesy notice at the home in advance of the eviction. A tenant who finds the locks changed with no court papers may want to reread that section of the handbook and consider legal help.

Complaints and paperwork. The Georgia Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division takes complaints about businesses that acted in an unfair, deceptive or unlawful way, and suggests resolving a problem with the business directly first. Whatever the job, get the total in writing before work starts and keep the receipt.

This is general information, not legal advice.

What to include in a request

  1. Whether anyone is in danger, and whether you have called 911 or the police (with a report number, if any).
  2. The address or nearest cross streets.
  3. What happened: lockout, break-in damage, storm damage or a lock that will not latch.
  4. Photos of the door, frame and lock.
  5. Photo ID, plus a lease or utility bill for the address.

See emergency locksmith for the service, house lockout for a lockout and Augusta for the city.
