Locked out on the riverfront bluff

Downtown's riverfront is built on a sloping bluff, and that shapes how a locksmith finds your car. The former cotton warehouses on River Street's south side sit below Factors Walk, which occupies the middle level, with Bay Street above. Two spots a short walk apart can be on different levels, so name the level and the street, not just "near River Street". One building can open onto all three levels, so a building name alone does not place the car. If you cannot tell which level you are on, say which street you can see above or below you.

Garages on parade day

A big event can change how the city's garages work. For the St. Patrick's Day parade on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, the City of Savannah let the public into its parking garages from 6 a.m. and did not allow residential decals that day. With parade routes closed, vehicles in some garages could not leave until it ended. If your keys are locked in during an event like that, give the garage name, the level and the nearest stairwell, and expect closed streets nearby.

Heat inside a shut car

Georgia summers are long, hot and humid, NOAA says, and the inside of a shut car parked in that sun can get dangerously hot. If a child or a pet is in the car, call 911 first rather than waiting for a locksmith.

What to send

• The garage name and level, or the street and which level of the bluff you are on
• The car's year, make, model and color
• Where the keys are: visible inside, in the trunk or lost
• Whether your ID and registration are inside the car
