Getting back into a Naperville house

A house lockout is a call to get a resident back inside after a lost key, a key left indoors or a lock that will not turn. What a locksmith needs to know depends on the house, and Naperville's older and newer neighborhoods differ a lot at the front door.

Entry types by neighborhood

• Naperville Historic District. The city's 2026 survey update counted 327 properties, led by Queen Anne houses and American Foursquares, with many gable-front, Italianate and bungalow homes on streets such as Brainard, Sleight and Wright. Say whether the front door is original or a later replacement, whether it has one keyhole or two, and whether a storm door with its own lock closes in front of it.
• Heritage Place townhouses. Construction began in December 2021 on North Central College's former Kroehler Memorial Campus, at the district's northeast end. Buildings that new may have a keypad or smart lock, so say so if yours does; a dead battery can look like a lockout.
• East Highlands. Harold Moser began developing it in 1954 as Naperville's first large commercial subdivision. Midcentury originals and newer houses now share its winding streets, so describe the door in front of you rather than guessing its age.

Waiting outside

NOAA's Illinois summary lists northeastern Illinois with average snowfall above 40 inches. On a winter night, do not wait on the step; go to a neighbor, a heated car or an open business. If a child, an older adult or a pet is inside and in distress, call 911 first rather than waiting for a locksmith.

What to have ready

1. Photo ID showing the address. If it lists an old address, bring a lease, deed, closing papers or a utility bill in your name.
2. The street address, the nearest cross streets or the subdivision name, and whether the house is in the historic district.
3. Which door is locked and what kind of lock it has.
4. Whether the key is lost, stolen or simply inside. If someone else may have it, mention lock rekeying at the same time.
