Proving the car is yours

A new key opens and starts the car, so have proof of ownership on hand: a photo ID plus the title or registration in the same name. If the registration is locked in the glove box, or the title is missing as well, say so in your request. For a leased or financed car, add the lease or loan papers.

• Downtown garages. LexPark runs four downtown garages: 350 West Short Street, the Transit Center on East Vine Street, Helix on Main and the Courthouse garage on Barr Street. Name the garage and level, and keep your parking ticket if you have one.
• Apartment lots. In the 2020–2024 Census estimates, 25.9 percent of Lexington homes are in buildings of five or more units. If the car is in a complex lot, give the building and space number, and mention any gate between the street and the car.
• Ranked roads. The city plows in five ranked tiers and asks residents not to park along ranked roads. If a lost key has left the car on one ahead of a storm, give the exact street and cross street, and ask early.

What to have ready

1. The VIN, from the registration, the title or the plate at the base of the windshield.
2. The year, make and model, and whether the car starts with a turned key or a push button.
3. Any key or fob that still works; a spare can matter when the new one is paired.
4. Your photo ID and the title or registration.
5. Whether the car can be moved, or has to be reached where it stands.
