Where keys snap in Lexington

Keys break under strain, and a few kinds of lock here take more of it than others.

• Shared entries. In the 2020–2024 Census estimates, about one Lexington home in four (25.9 percent) is in a building of five or more units, against 11.7 percent across Kentucky. A building entry lock is used by every resident, and the building may control it, so the property manager needs to hear about a snapped key.
• Original cylinders. A door in one of the city's H-1 historic districts, such as Gratz Park or South Hill, may still carry a mortise lock, and its cylinder may be as old as the door itself.
• Swollen doors. NOAA's Kentucky summary describes humid summers, and a wood door can swell until the deadbolt binds. A key used as a lever against it is the one that breaks.
• Car locks. A key can also snap in a car door or an ignition, and the same rule about not forcing it applies.

What not to do

• Do not push the other half, or a spare, into the same keyway; it can drive the broken piece deeper.
• Do not glue the pieces or grip the stub with pliers. Glue near the pins can turn an extraction into a lock repair or a new lock.
• Stop turning. If the lock is stuck part-way, leave it there.

What to send

1. A photo of the keyway and of the piece you still hold.
2. Whether the door is locked or unlocked now, and whether there is another way in.
3. Where the lock is: unit door, building entry, storage room, storefront or car.
4. For a building entry, the property manager's name, since the building may control that lock.
