Homes and locks in Louisville

Old Louisville is the largest preservation district made up almost entirely of Victorian architecture. Many of its large homes became boarding houses during the Great Depression, and it also has several 20th-century buildings of 15 to 20 stories. In a converted house, say whether you need your own unit door or the shared entry opened.

Old Louisville also has the largest collection of pedestrian-only streets of any U.S. neighborhood: eleven courts, built from 1891 into the 1920s, where houses face each other across a grass median. If your door faces a court such as Belgravia Court rather than a street, say which end is closest to parking.

Germantown, developed heavily in the 1890s, has the largest collection of shotgun houses in the city. If yours has front and rear doors, both can be keyed alike.

Historic districts and exterior doors

The Landmarks Ordinance (LMCO §§ 32.250–32.263), as amended by Ordinance No. 096, Series 2019, lists seven preservation districts: West Main Street, Limerick, Old Louisville, Cherokee Triangle, Parkland, Butchertown and Clifton. Under § 32.252(D), no one may make an exterior alteration to a structure in a district, or to an individual landmark, without a certificate of appropriateness.

Section 32.256(A) says these, among others, are not exterior alterations:

• ordinary exterior repairs that exactly reproduce the existing design in the existing material
• kick plates and door knockers
• video doorbells, cameras, lighting motion sensors and similar temporary security items that do not change the permanent historic fabric

Keypad and smart deadbolts are not on that list, so check with Metro's Landmarks staff before changing street-facing hardware. Lock rekeying changes the pins inside an existing cylinder and leaves the visible hardware as it is.

Businesses and buildings

Downtown, the West Main Street district has the largest collection of cast-iron facades outside New York's SoHo. Replacing a storefront door with a different design is not on the § 32.256(A) list. For commercial lock work there, rekeying or repairing existing hardware leaves the facade unchanged.

Car trouble in Louisville

According to Churchill Downs, all Derby Week onsite parking is reserved in advance, there is no re-entry into the lots, and shuttles run between the Kentucky Exposition Center and the Black Lot by the Paddock Gate. Central Avenue was closed May 1 to 3 for the 2026 races.

If your keys are locked in a car in one of the color-coded lots or at the Exposition Center, give the lot name when you request a car lockout visit.

Local rules worth knowing

Chapter 119 of the Louisville Metro Code of Ordinances, as amended by Ordinance No. 197, Series 2022, requires owners of rental housing units, other than those exempted under § 119.02, to register them online through the Department of Codes and Regulations. Under § 119.03:

• A new owner must register within 30 days of the transfer of ownership.
• Each year the department randomly selects 10 percent of registrants in Renter Tenure Areas, where rental units exceed 33 percent of residential property, for inspection after notice under KRS 383.615 and 383.665.
