Weather and fob batteries

A key fob is a small radio transmitter, and in many cars it also carries the chip the engine has to recognize before it will start. Programming pairs a new or replacement fob with the car and can remove lost fobs from the car's memory so they no longer work.

Many fob complaints that look like programming faults come from weather. NOAA's climate summary for the state points to warm, humid summers and freezing winter nights, and both are hard on a small remote. Coin-cell batteries lose output in the cold, so a fob that works in the kitchen can fail at the car on a freezing morning. Humid air and rain get past worn case seals and corrode the battery contacts. Before booking, try a fresh battery of the type printed on the old one. If the range comes back, the fob does not need programming.

Garages and street parking

The City of Rockville does not operate any parking garages, so the first question for a car in one is who does, and whether that operator lets an outside technician in. Programming is done at the car, so give the garage name, level and space.
