Lockouts by building type in Rockville

A Rockville lockout often involves more than one door. Census Bureau estimates for 2024 put 34.8 percent of the city's homes in buildings with 20 or more units, against 10.8 percent nationally. In a building that size, a lobby or garage entrance may stand between the street and your apartment, and someone other than you may control it.

• Detached house. Check whether the back door or an attached-garage door was left unlocked.
• Townhouse. Try every entrance you have, including a garage or patio door, and ask whether a neighbor on the row holds a spare.
• Apartment. Call the building office first. Staff may hold a unit key, and if they can let you through the main entrance, the house lockout work is limited to your own door.

Proof that you live there

Anyone asked to open a door will reasonably want to know it is yours. A photo ID showing the address is the simplest proof. If your ID shows an older address, a lease or deed in your name can back it up. When the landlord changed the locks

A lockout by your own landlord is a different matter. Maryland Real Property § 8-216 bars a landlord from taking possession of a dwelling unit by locking the tenant out. Possession comes through a court's warrant of restitution executed by a sheriff or constable, or after the tenant abandons or surrenders the unit.
