Do Cambridge doors suit a smart lock

Most smart locks replace a standard deadbolt, so they suit a door already drilled for one. If a pre-war door carries a mortise lock, the kind recessed into the door edge, a smart deadbolt may need a new bore or a model made for mortise hardware, and a worn door may need lock replacement work first. Old wood doors also swell and shrink with the seasons, so check that the bolt throws smoothly by hand before choosing an electronic lock. A bolt that only throws when you shove the door is a strike plate problem, not a job for a motor.

Short-term rentals and shared buildings

Section 4.60 of the Cambridge Zoning Ordinance regulates short-term rentals, meaning a unit or bedroom rented for fewer than 30 consecutive days, and operators register with the Inspectional Services Department. A keypad is a natural way to hand guests a code, but the department's inspection checklist cites the state building code, 780 CMR 51.00 R311.2, for two lock points. Each exit door must open from the inside in one motion, with no key, special code or special knowledge, and locking hardware on rented bedroom doors must meet the same standard. A lock that needs a code to open from the inside would not qualify.

Renters should ask the owner before installing anything. The State Sanitary Code's lock rule, 105 CMR 410.270, puts entry-door locks and occupant keys on the owner, so a swapped lock can conflict with the lease. This is general information, not legal advice.

Cold weather and batteries

NOAA's climate summary gives January temperatures from the low 20s °F in western Massachusetts to about 30 °F near the coast. Alkaline batteries lose capacity in the cold, and an exterior keypad can respond sluggishly on an icy morning. Change batteries before winter instead of waiting for the low-battery warning, and if the model has a mechanical key, carry it with you rather than hiding it near the door.
