Will your door take one

Most retrofit smart deadbolts are made for a standard round deadbolt bore. That fits many doors, but not every older Worcester door. Some use a mortise lock, a box-shaped body recessed into the door, which calls for a mortise-compatible model or changes to the door.

Age matters even where three-deckers arrived late. Building reached southern Greendale after the first neighborhoods, but the 1988 National Register nomination's date range ends at 1930, so even a late building is over ninety years old. Wood doors move with the seasons, and a motorized bolt that drags on its strike can stall or drain its batteries. The door should latch smoothly by hand before a smart lock goes on.

Shared doors and approvals

• Unit door or stairwell door. A smart lock on your own flat's door affects you. One on a three-decker's shared front or rear stairwell door affects every household, so the owner and the other households need to agree.
• Renters. The State Sanitary Code (105 CMR 410.270) puts entry locks on the owner, who must also supply each occupant with keys for the building entry, the unit and shared spaces. A model that keeps a keyed cylinder makes that simple to honor.
• Getting out. Worcester's landlord guide from Inspectional Services says required exit doors must open without keys, special knowledge or effort, so the inside of such a door should have a plain thumbturn or lever, not a keypad or an app.
• Managed buildings. In an apartment building with a management office, ask before anything goes on a unit door.

Cold weather and batteries

Even on the coast, January sits around 30 °F in NOAA's state climate summary, and the west runs colder. Alkaline batteries lose capacity in the cold, so a lock on an exterior door may warn of low power sooner in winter. Change batteries at the first warning, and clear snow and ice off an outdoor keypad before pressing it. Keep a working key to the door somewhere other than inside the house.
