Victorian streets and post-war neighborhoods

• McKnight dates to 1881 as a planned residential neighborhood and has more than 900 Victorian "painted lady" houses.

Original Victorian entry doors are often thick wood fitted with a mortise lock, a boxed lock body set into a pocket cut in the door edge. A worn one can often be repaired or replaced with a lock that fits the same pocket, keeping the old door intact. The post-war houses of Sixteen Acres more often have knob or lever sets with separate deadbolts, where rekeying every exterior door to one key is usually simple.

Historic district review before a door change

Springfield's local historic districts include McKnight, Forest Park Heights, Maple Hill, Lower Maple, Ridgewood, Colony Hills, Apremont Triangle and Quadrangle/Mattoon, among others.

Under M.G.L. c. 40C, § 6, no building in a historic district may be altered in a way that affects its exterior architectural features unless the commission has first issued a certificate of appropriateness, non-applicability or hardship. Section 5 defines those features as parts of a building open to view from a public street, way, park or body of water, including the type and style of doors.

Before replacing a street-facing door in one of these districts, or switching to hardware of a visibly different style, ask Springfield Historical Commission staff whether the Commission controls the change. Downtown, Boston Road and Mason Square

Metro Center has been Springfield's civic and business center since 1636, with downtown high-rises and nightlife beside Neo-Classical cultural institutions. Boston Road is lined with shopping plazas designed for car travel. Mason Square is McKnight's commercial district and home to American International College.

In downtown towers and converted mill buildings, the street entrance usually belongs to the building, so ask the property manager before a commercial lock change on a shared door.

Snow bans and parked cars

Springfield's February 2026 snow parking ban notice barred parking on the even-numbered side of the street from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and on the odd-numbered side from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It warned that public works and police would ticket and tow vehicles in violation, and it opened all Springfield Parking Authority lots and garages, including Union Station, to public parking at no charge until the ban ended. Check each new notice.

If keys are locked in a car on the ban side, say so in your car lockout request. In a Boston Road plaza, name the nearest store; in a garage, give its name and level.
