Which door is shut

Lockouts here depend on the building. Pill Hill is a limestone bluff roughly between 3rd and 9th streets and 7th and 10th avenues Southwest, and most of its houses went up in the first third of the 1900s. Doors that old may be wood, and the lock may be original or a later add-on, so describe what you see: a keyhole in the knob, a separate deadbolt above it, or a tall plate with a handle and keyhole.

Downtown is different. Destination Medical Center plans divide the core into six districts, among them Heart of the City around the Mayo Clinic campus and St. Marys Place, which covers St. Marys Hospital, St. Marys Park and most of 2nd Street. An apartment resident there can be shut out of a unit, a lobby, a garage or a skyway door. Shared entrances usually belong to the building, so start with management.

Just over half of Rochester's homes were built in 1990 or later, so elsewhere the lock is likelier to be a standard knob and deadbolt, or a keypad model whose batteries have died.

Proof that you live there

Have something ready that ties you to the address: a photo ID showing it, or a lease or deed if your ID carries an old address. If your ID is locked inside, say so in the request.

Renters can often reach a landlord or manager who holds a key. A landlord shutting a tenant out is a different matter. Minnesota Statutes section 504B.375 says unlawful exclusion may include removing doors, windows or locks, and a tenant can file a verified petition in the county's district court.
