Rochester's housing is young for Minnesota. According to Census estimates, 8.5 percent of Rochester's homes are in buildings from 1939 or earlier, against 15.3 percent statewide. One place with many older doors is Pill Hill, the limestone bluff above St. Marys Hospital, where houses went up in the early 1900s largely for Mayo Clinic staff.

Doors from that era may hold a mortise lock set into a pocket in the door edge, or they may have been bored for a knob and deadbolt later, sometimes more than once. A replacement has to fit what is already cut: a new mortise body in the old pocket, a retrofit plate that covers earlier holes, or a standard set where the wood allows. Boring fresh holes in an original door is hard to undo, so it pays to measure first.

Pill Hill's heritage status

Pill Hill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 and became a local landmark district when the City Council approved it on February 19, 2025. Heritage designations and alterations fall under Section 60.200.040C of the Rochester Unified Development Code. According to the City's Pill Hill summary, City staff and the Heritage Preservation Commission review major exterior alterations, and routine maintenance and repair are not restricted. Newer homes

Where a door was drilled to standard sizes, as newer doors tend to be, replacement is mostly a matter of choice: a sturdier deadbolt, a reinforced strike with longer screws, levers that are easier on stiff hands, or a keypad model. When the lock still works and only the door has shifted, lock repair may be enough.
