Which door you are locked out of

Which door is locked against you depends on the building, and Duluth has several kinds.

• Double houses and duplexes. The city's 2017 historic resources inventory of Lincoln Park, long called the West End, dates most of its double houses to 1890 through 1910 and notes that each unit has its own doorway. Where one exterior door also serves both households, being shut out can mean the shared entry as well as your unit.
• Row flats. The same study describes brick rows of three to six units, each with its own door, and says Duluth's concentration of them may be unique among Minnesota cities. Give your unit's position in the row, counted from a corner if house numbers are hard to read.
• Converted houses. From the 1930s on, many Lincoln Park houses were divided into more units, so one address can have several entry doors. Say which one is yours.
• Apartment buildings. Duluth has a notably higher share of units in buildings of 10 or more. A lobby door usually runs on the building's own keys, so that is a call to management; your unit door is a separate request.

Waiting out a Duluth winter

Snow is part of many Duluth lockouts: NOAA puts the Lake Superior shore near 90 inches a year, and Lincoln Park's frame houses sit on a steep hillside, so steps and walks can be slick. Wait in a car, with a neighbor or inside a nearby business rather than on the step. Avoid forcing a door or climbing toward an upper window on an icy day. If someone inside needs help and cannot reach the door, call 911.

What to have ready

• Photo ID that shows the address. If it lists an older one, a lease, deed or utility bill in your name can fill the gap.
• For a rental, the landlord's or manager's contact details, since they may hold a key.
• The street address, the unit, and which door: front, side, rear or shared entry.
• Whether the key is lost or just inside. A lost key may call for lock rekeying afterward.
