Old doors, mixed hardware

Duluth's housing is old even by Minnesota standards. The city's 2025 housing needs analysis estimates that 43 percent of Duluth's housing units were built before 1940, against 29 percent for St. Louis County. On a door that age the lock may be original, a later unit fitted into old wood, or a patchwork of plugged holes left by earlier sets.

Replacement is the answer when rekeying cannot fix the problem: a cylinder so worn that keys catch or spin, a bolt that no longer reaches its strike, a cracked lock body, or parts no longer made. For hardware that still works well, lock rekeying is usually enough.

Lincoln Park frame houses and row flats

The Lincoln Park study in the city's 2017 historic inventory describes a hillside of mostly frame houses. It also records row flats, usually brick with flat roofs, in groups of three to six units.

• Many older doors were never bored for a modern deadbolt. Adding one means drilling the face and edge, and on thin or dried-out wood a reinforcing plate is worth considering.
• Check that the door closes squarely first. A new lock on a sagging door will bind the way the old one did.
• Newer doors are more likely to be drilled for the standard deadbolt size, so replacement gets closer to a direct swap. The analysis dates another 30 percent of Duluth units to 1950 through 1979.
