Columbia's historic residential core rings downtown, reaching west along Broadway and south into East Campus. Downtown, East Campus and West Broadway are among the city's nine National Register historic districts.

East Campus, roughly bounded by Bouchelle, College, University and High streets, covers about 60 acres. Its 262 contributing buildings went up between about 1895 and 1945, mostly Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival and bungalow houses, with many Greek student organization houses among them.

Nearly 40,000 college students attend the University of Missouri, Stephens College and Columbia College, and many high-rise apartment buildings have gone up downtown since the early 2000s. Businesses and buildings

Downtown covers about a square mile between the University of Missouri, Stephens College and Columbia College. It is the city's financial and business district, marked by the 10-story Tiger Hotel and 15-story Paquin Tower. Beyond it, the densest commercial areas follow Interstate 70, U.S. Route 63, Stadium Boulevard and Grindstone Parkway. Car trouble in Columbia

Snow averages about 16.5 inches a season, mostly December to March. The city sorts streets into three snow priority tiers: first-priority routes include Broadway and Vandiver Drive, second-priority routes include Derby Ridge Drive and Fairview. When snow reaches 2 inches, parking on priority routes is not allowed, and a car left there faces a $100 fine plus towing and storage charges. If a car lockout keeps you from moving a car on one of these routes, say so.

Mizzou football weekends change campus parking. Holders of many campus permits must move their cars between 5 and 10 p.m. on the Friday before the game, mostly to the Conley Avenue, Hitt Street, Turner Avenue or University Avenue parking structures, and may return between 12 a.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday. Cars not moved may be ticketed or towed at the owner's expense.

Local rules worth knowing

Rental certificates. Under Columbia's Rental Unit Conservation Law (City Code Chapter 22, Article 5), it is unlawful to operate an apartment house, rooming house, two-family dwelling or single rental unit without a current certificate of compliance (Section 22-184). Since January 1, 2025, certificates are issued for five years, with an inspection at each renewal.

Door and window locks. The city's rental inspection checklist, citing International Property Maintenance Code sections 304.15 and 304.18.1, says entrance locks must tightly secure the door. Egress doors need a deadbolt with at least a 1-inch throw that operates without a key, tool or special knowledge; the interior door between garage and house is exempt.
