• Mid-Town, a National Register district of about 455 buildings, was built from roughly 1871 to 1952 in Late Victorian, Colonial Revival and Craftsman bungalow styles, and includes buildings on the Drury campus.
• Walnut Street is a city urban conservation district. Its design guidelines name Italianate as the earliest house type, followed by Queen Anne, catalogue-built houses, bungalows and period revivals.
• West Central, bounded by Chestnut Expressway, Kimbrough Avenue, Grand Street and Kansas Expressway, has a high concentration of rentals, and the city puts its average housing age at 102 years.

On Walnut Street, the guidelines ask owners to consider keeping all parts of historic doors, including screen and storm doors, hardware and knobs, and to repair before replacing in kind. Most door work is approved by staff, but swapping an original door for another type or style may go to the review board. That favors lock repair or new hardware fitted to the existing door over a new door.

The Commercial Street historic district runs six blocks beside the railroad, from Washington Avenue to Lyon Avenue. It grew after 1870 as the commercial center of the railroad town of North Springfield.
