The coin cell in a key fob has a hard time with Missouri's seasons. NOAA's state summary describes arctic air in winter and summer humidity that has trended upward since the mid-20th century. Cold lowers a small battery's voltage, so a remote that works in September may need two presses on a January morning or respond only beside the door. Damp air that gets into a cracked case can corrode the battery contacts over a summer.

Try the simple step first: a new battery of the type printed on the old one. If the fob still fails, or the car no longer recognizes it, it needs programming or a replacement fob.

• Campus structures. On football Fridays many permit holders must move their cars into the Conley Avenue and University Avenue parking structures. A fob that works at arm's length but not across the deck has a weak battery or transmitter, and it is worth sorting out before the car has to be moved.
• Snow routes. At 2 inches of snow, parking is not allowed on the city's priority routes. A fob that will not unlock the car on a morning it must be moved is worth mentioning in your request. This is general information, not legal advice.
• Driveways. If the fob fails even at the door with a fresh battery, its programming may have been lost.

What to have ready

• Every fob for the car, working or not. On some cars, adding a new fob erases any fob not present, so one left in a drawer can stop working.
• Make, model and year, and whether the car has push-button start
• Which buttons respond and which do not, and whether anything changed after a battery swap or a cold night
• Photo ID with the registration or title
• Where the car is: street, driveway, or garage and level
