Anyone inside comes first

If a child, a pet or anyone who cannot open a door is locked in the car, call 911 now instead of waiting for a locksmith. NOAA's Missouri summary describes warm, moist Gulf air in summer, and a closed car heats well past the air around it, so the person or animal inside comes before the key.

Parking while you wait

• Permit districts. The city's neighborhood parking permits apply in Kickapoo, Phelps Grove, Rountree and Midtown, where residents need a rear-window sticker for street parking during certain hours. If you are locked out on one of those blocks, read the posted signs and put the hours in your request.
• A missing car. If the car is gone rather than locked, Springfield police may have custody-towed it. Those cars go to a lot in Brookline.

• Residential streets. Give the block, the side of the street and the house number you are parked in front of.
• Apartment and store lots. Give the building or store name and the row or space number.
• Anywhere with a gate or a barrier. Say so, and say how far the car sits from the entrance.
