What makes a lock problem urgent

If anyone is hurt, trapped or in danger, call 911 before anything else. After that, a lock problem is urgent when it leaves a home or business open, or leaves someone outside in bad weather.

• After a break-in. Call the police first and leave the door and lock as they are until officers have seen them. Then the job is making the door secure: repairing or replacing a damaged lock and strike, or rekeying if keys were taken.
• Storm damage. NOAA's climate summary says New Jersey sees at least one coastal storm a year, and five to ten in some years. A door that shifts or will not latch after a storm leaves a building open until it is repaired or replaced.
• Freezing weather. NOAA describes the state's winters as moderately cold and occasionally snowy, so a lockout on a freezing night is more than an inconvenience.

Downtown owners hit by a break-in may want security gates, but in the downtown historic districts a new door or window gate where none existed needs a Certificate of Appropriateness, and exterior window gates are not permitted above the first floor on the front facade.

Lock changes after a restraining order

This is general information, not legal advice. N.J.S.A. 46:8-9.14, enacted as P.L.2023, c.174, lets a court that issues a temporary or permanent domestic violence restraining order direct the landlord to change the locks where the victim lives. If the landlord has not installed new locks within 48 hours of the victim's written request, the victim may change them, then has 48 hours to tell the landlord and provide a copy of the new keys. Keep the order and a dated copy of your request.

Fewer than one Hudson County home in ten is a detached house, so many renters here share an entrance with neighbors. Say in your request whether the locks in question are on your unit, the shared entrance or both.

What to send first

1. The address or cross streets.
2. What happened, and which door: stoop, unit, apartment, storefront or gate.
3. For a break-in, whether the police have been and finished.
4. Photos of the lock, door edge and frame.
