Proof that the car is yours

A replacement key is cut or programmed for one vehicle, so have these ready to show the car is yours:

1. Photo ID with a name that matches the paperwork.
2. The title or registration. Your state motor-vehicle agency issues both; if your copy is missing or out of date, contact the agency before you book.
3. The VIN, found on the dash plate at the base of the windshield, on the door-jamb label and on your registration.
4. Make, model and year, plus any spare key or fob you still have.
5. If the vehicle is registered to someone else, such as a relative or a leasing company, written permission from the registered owner.
