Huning Highlands, directly east of Downtown, was platted in 1880 as the first subdivision added to the original townsite. Most of its houses went up between the 1880s and 1920s in Queen Anne, Italianate and other Victorian styles. It became Albuquerque's first Historic Overlay Zone in 1980. If the front door is original to the house, mention it when asking about lock repair, so the work starts from the hardware already in that door.

Nob Hill, just east of the University of New Mexico, lies between Girard Boulevard and Washington Street and was developed between about 1925 and 1950. Its Monte Vista Addition, platted in 1926, set streets in an irregular pattern around two intersecting diagonal boulevards, Campus and Monte Vista, so the nearest cross streets help locate a house there.

On the West Mesa, newer suburban subdivisions near the southwestern city limits sit beside homes built as far back as the 1940s, so houses on neighboring streets can have locks decades apart in age. Car trouble in Albuquerque

The city meters street parking in Old Town, Downtown and Nob Hill from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, except federal holidays; Sundays need no payment. A car stuck at a meter on a Saturday afternoon is still on the clock, and the paid receipt has to be placed on the dashboard, which is not possible while the keys are locked inside.

Some residential streets around Downtown, the State Fairgrounds and the University of New Mexico are restricted to residents and their visitors. A permit is valid only within a two-block radius of the holder's address, and permits cannot be transferred.

Local rules worth knowing

Albuquerque's Housing Code, Code of Ordinances Sections 14-3-1-1 through 14-3-5-99, sets minimum conditions for homes inside city limits and does not apply outside them. The city's Office of Consumer Protection highlights these provisions:

• Section 14-3-4-4: a building should not have unsecured exterior doors.
• Sections 14-3-3-1, 14-3-4-3 and 14-3-4-8: the building must be structurally sound, with no broken doors or windows.
• Section 14-3-3-3: every bedroom below the fourth floor must have a window that opens for emergency escape. Keep that in mind before adding hardware that holds a bedroom window shut.
