Homes and locks in Santa Fe

Barrio de Analco, an 18-acre historic district roughly bounded by East De Vargas and College streets, is one of the oldest clusters of working-class homes in North America. Its adobe buildings, in Spanish-Pueblo and Territorial styles, include the two-story Oldest House, dated to 1620, and San Miguel Mission, completed in 1710.

Canyon Road runs parallel to the Acequia Madre, an irrigation ditch dating to 1680. Houses along it were built with adobe walls and courtyards, often as compounds for extended families.

For locks, that means:

• In a compound, the street gate, the courtyard door and each house door can be keyed differently. List every lock you need opened or changed.
• When a compound has passed through several households, rekeying the gate and each door retires old key copies.
• An original handmade door may not take off-the-shelf hardware; photos of both faces help.

Tierra Contenta, in southwest Santa Fe, is a master-planned, mixed-use community whose master plan was adopted in 1994. More than 3,000 single-family and multi-family homes have been developed there since. In a multi-family building, ask the manager or association which locks are yours to change.

Businesses and buildings

Canyon Road was once mainly residential. Artists, notably Los Cinco Pintores, were drawn to it in the 1920s, and it now holds more than a hundred art galleries and studios. Car trouble in Santa Fe

The city's Parking Division oversees about 1,850 off-street spaces downtown, in the Railyard, Sandoval and Community Convention Center garages, the Water Street lot and the Railyard surface lots. Meters are enforced Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., except meter holidays. A meter keeps running while keys sit locked in the car, so for car lockout help, say whether the car is at a meter, in a garage or on a residential street.

On Christmas Eve, the Farolito Walk along Canyon Road can draw thousands. If a key is lost in that crowd, note where you parked and the nearest cross street before asking about car key replacement.

Local rules worth knowing

Historic districts. The city's Historic Preservation Division requires a Pre-Application Request for any proposed modification to a property in Santa Fe's five historic districts. Minor alterations may be approved administratively. Depending on the property's historic status and the scope of work, a public hearing before the Historic Districts Review Board may be required, with notice under SFCC §14-3.1(H). The request asks for window and door styles, yardwalls and gates. If a lock problem becomes a door or gate replacement, plan for that review first.

Short-term rentals. Under SFCC 14-6.2(A)(5)(e)(i), every short-term rental must have a local operator, available at all hours to respond to complaints, who is reachable by telephone and can be at the unit within one hour of being contacted. A locked-out guest should start with that operator. Under SFCC 14-6.2(A)(5)(i)(vii), a permitted unit's address numerals must be at least four inches tall, in a contrasting color and visible from the street.
