Proving the car is yours

A new key cut when every original is gone opens and starts the car, so expect to show that it belongs to you. Have photo ID and the title or current registration in your name. If the registration is inside the car, look for a photo or scan of it on your phone. If the name on your ID differs from the one on the paperwork, bring whatever links the two.

Where the car is waiting

With no working key, a car usually stays put, so where it sits matters to the request.

• At home. West Mesa streets mix newer subdivisions with homes from the 1940s, so give the street and cross street. Say whether the car is in a driveway or a garage, and whether the driver's door can open fully.
• At work. For a car in a Journal Center or Uptown lot, give the building name and which lot or garage level it is on.
• On a metered street. The city meters street parking in Old Town, Downtown and Nob Hill six days a week, Monday through Saturday, so say how long the car has been there. Give the block and the side of the street.

What to have ready

• the VIN, from the corner of the dashboard seen through the windshield, the driver's door jamb or the registration
• the year, make and model, and whether the car starts with a push button
• any remaining keys or fobs, even damaged ones
