Start with proof the car is yours

A replacement key is a different job from a lockout, and ownership is the first thing to be able to show. Gather these before you ask:

1. Photo ID.
2. Your registration or title, in your name, from your state motor-vehicle agency.
3. The VIN, which appears on the registration and on the dashboard at the base of the windshield.
4. Any key or fob you still have, and the car's make, model and year.

If you bought the car recently or it is registered to someone else, say so at the start.
