Sunset Hills covers about 280 acres west of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). A. K. Moore Realty Company filed its plats in late 1926, and its houses, overwhelmingly brick veneered, date from the late 1920s through the early 1960s. Colonial Revival is the most common style, with Tudor Revival beside it. Many properties keep a historic garage; if one still has its own key, lock rekeying can put house and garage on one key.

College Hill sits between UNCG on the west and Greensboro College on the east. Its mostly frame houses include one of the city's largest groups of Queen Anne and transitional Queen Anne/Colonial Revival homes from the 1890s and 1900s, followed by bungalows and foursquares. The Downtown Greensboro Historic District follows Elm Street from the 100 block of North Elm to the 600 block of South Elm. Its oldest commercial buildings are 1880s brick, usually three stories. In the 1930s and 1940s owners commonly removed a floor or two from older buildings and refaced them completely, so storefronts on one block can differ by decades. Greensboro Code Section 16-163 makes it unlawful to leave a vehicle parked on a street where official traffic-control devices indicate no parking during snow removal. Under Section 16-78, the police chief or a designee may wheel-lock, or tow and impound, an illegally parked vehicle with three or more unpaid parking tickets overdue for 90 days. A wheel-locked car is a matter for the city, not a locksmith; the code says the city is not responsible for damage from unauthorized attempts to release or move it.

Section 11-41(d) of the city's Housing Code, following G.S. 42-42(a)(8), treats a dwelling as immediately dangerous if it lacks operable locks on all doors leading outside, or has broken windows or lacks operable locks on all ground-level windows. Under Section 11-41(c), when such a condition threatens occupants and is not the occupant's responsibility under Section 11-9, the Minimum Housing Standards Commission may direct the city to repair it after at least 72 hours' notice to the owner, with the cost becoming a lien on the property.
