Key Fob Programming in Raleigh, NC

Before you assume the fob needs programming

When range drops, or the car answers only from up close, try a fresh battery of the type printed on the old one; a weak coin cell looks a lot like a fob that has lost its pairing. Water is a harder problem. A fob that went through the wash, or a car that sat in floodwater after a storm, may need a new remote rather than reprogramming, and the car's own receiver may need checking as well.

Building fobs and car fobs

In a Midtown tower near North Hills, the lobby and garage may open with a fob issued by management. That fob belongs to the building's access system, so a lost or dead one is a job for the building office, not a car-key job. If both fobs share a ring, say which one stopped working.

Say where the car sits, since the setting changes the plan: a driveway or garage in North Raleigh, a tower garage in Midtown, or a downtown deck or street space. If a garage opens only with a building fob, arrange entry beforehand; that fob is separate from the car's. If the only fob is locked inside the car, that is a car lockout first.

What to have ready

• every working fob and key for the car, since some vehicles keep only the keys present when a new one is added
• the VIN, and the year, make and model
• photo ID and the registration
• whether the fob starts the car or only locks and unlocks it
• if the car is shared, both drivers' fobs, so each can be tested afterward
• for a used car with a single fob, say so; adding a second is different work from replacing a lost one
