Charlotte weather and your fob

Hot summers and cold snaps both show up in a key fob. Heat from a hot car or a sunny dashboard can wear down a coin-cell battery sooner, and in cold weather a tired battery sends a weaker signal, so range tends to shrink first on winter mornings. NOAA's state summary describes a humid climate, and humid air can corrode battery contacts over time.

Water is the other risk. A fob soaked in rain or run through a wash may stop working. Take the battery out and let the fob dry completely before testing it; if it still fails, it may need replacing and programming.

Before asking for programming, rule out the battery:

• Range has shrunk and you have to stand close to the car.
• The fob works on some presses and not others.
• The dashboard shows a key battery warning.

A fresh battery usually fixes those. Some models need a short re-sync after a battery change; the owner's manual covers it.

Where the car is parked

Programming happens at the car, with the doors open and the fobs in hand, so the setting matters.

• Uptown decks. Cars parked for Uptown's venues and towers sit on deck levels. Steel and concrete can weaken a fob's signal, so a weak test inside a deck is not necessarily a fair one. Give the deck name, level and space.
• NoDa streets. NoDa is about two and a half miles northeast of Uptown, well away from the decks. For a car at the curb, give the street name (North Davidson Street, if that is where you are), the nearest cross street and which side you are on.

What to have ready

1. Every fob and key for the car, including the ones that still work. Some vehicles erase any fob not present when new ones are programmed.
2. The VIN, from the registration or the windshield plate.
3. Photo ID, plus the title or registration to show the car is yours.
4. The new fob, if you bought one, with its part number.
