Meters, tickets and tow zones while you wait

Downtown Raleigh meters, including those in Glenwood South, require payment from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. In the Hillsborough District near NC State, paid time runs until 8 p.m. Payment is not required on weekends or observed holidays. A weekday lockout that outlasts the time you paid for can still end in a ticket.

The district changes the answer. Glenwood South, the entertainment district, is outside paid time after 6 p.m. on a weekday, while the same hour near NC State is still metered. The city can also tow where signs or posted notices bar parking, including tow-away zones and travel lanes, so say so in your request if the car is in one of those spots.

Heat and people inside

NOAA describes North Carolina summers as very warm, and a closed car heats up well beyond the outside air. If a child, an animal or anyone unable to get out is inside, call 911 first; do not wait for a locksmith. If the engine is running or the keys are in the ignition, say so in the request. Whoever is locked out should wait in a nearby business or a friend's car rather than standing in a hot lot.

• in a parking deck, the deck name or address, the level and the nearest stairwell or elevator
• at Crabtree Valley Mall or another shopping center, the nearest store entrance
• the car's make, model, color and plate
• where the keys are: ignition, seat, trunk or unknown
• whether you can show ID and the registration once the car is open
