Water and Charleston locks

Water is the local factor to watch. NOAA's climate summary for South Carolina says sea level at Charleston has risen 1.3 inches per decade since 1921, and 2020 brought a record 14 tidal flood days there. Floodwater that reaches a door can leave grit in the cylinder and latch and start corrosion. A lock that dries out that way may bind, and a key that drags is the first warning.

After water has reached a lock:

1. Once the water is gone, work the lock several times with the door open to see whether it binds.
2. Rinse loose grit from the outside and let the lock dry completely.
3. Use a dry lubricant made for locks; oily sprays can hold grit.
4. If the key still drags, have the lock checked for corrosion before the next flood or storm.

Locks shut behind hurricane panels

In the Old and Historic and Old City districts, a Board of Architectural Review policy adopted in 2006 lets hurricane panels go up only while a storm is approaching and requires them to come down within 14 days after the threat passes. A lock behind a panel can sit unused that whole time. When the panel comes off, test the lock with the door open before you pull the door shut behind you. Repairs that often fix the problem

• Bolt throws only when you push or lift the door. The strike and bolt no longer line up because the door or frame has moved; adjusting the strike often cures it.
• Latch doesn't catch. A weak spring or worn latch can be serviced or swapped on its own.
• Loose knob or lever. Mounting screws or internal parts have worked loose.
