Apartment buildings: two locks, two keyholders

Census Bureau estimates for 2024 put 43.8 percent of Greenville's homes in buildings of five or more units, and 56.5 percent of the city's occupied homes are rented. A lockout in a building like that can involve two locks: the shared entry and the door to your unit. Where the entry uses a key or fob issued by management, opening it is management's call, so contact the leasing office or property manager first; they may hold a unit key too. If nobody answers, say so in your request and give the building name and unit number.

Older houses with more than one door

Victorian-era houses cluster in Hampton-Pinckney, Greenville's first trolley-car neighborhood, and the city calls that group its most important. Colonel Elias Earle, north of downtown, was an early automobile neighborhood of side driveways, rear garages and porte cocheres. A house arranged around a driveway and a rear garage can have more than one entrance, so check every door you have a key for before asking for help.

If the locked door is original to a historic-district house, say so. The city's preservation guidelines ask that historic door hardware be maintained, which is worth knowing before anyone works on the lock.

What to have ready

If a child, an older adult or a pet is alone inside and needs help, call 911 first and send the request second. Otherwise, expect to be asked to show that you live there. In a city where most homes are rented, a lease in your name is a common proof, a deed serves owners, and a photo ID with the address is the usual start; if those papers are inside, say so. In a house lockout request, include:

• the address, the neighborhood and which door you are locked out of
• whether it is a house, a townhouse or an apartment, and whether you own or rent
• the lock on that door, if you know it: a knob, a deadbolt or an older mortise lock
• whether the keys are locked inside or lost
