Safety comes first

Some situations belong to 911 before any locksmith. Call 911 if a child, a pet or anyone who cannot get out is locked in a house or car, if someone is hurt, or if you think an intruder may still be inside. After a break-in, call the police first and wait until they have been through. Photograph the damaged door and frame before anything is repaired, since the photos help with the police report and any insurance claim.

What counts as urgent in Nashville

A lock problem is urgent when you cannot get safely inside, or cannot secure the building once you are in.

  • After a storm. Since 2000, Tennessee has received 33 major disaster declarations involving severe storms and flooding, according to NOAA. Wind, fallen limbs or water can rack a frame so the bolt no longer reaches the strike, leaving a door that will not lock.
  • Ice and cold. In February 2021, heavy snow and severe icing caused widespread damage in Tennessee. A frozen lock or a lockout on a night like that is not something to wait out on the porch. Get to a warm car, a neighbor's home or a business while the lockout is sorted out.

When a landlord changes the locks

Because Davidson County is above the population threshold in T.C.A. § 66-28-102, the state landlord-tenant act covers Nashville tenants. Section 66-28-504 addresses a landlord who unlawfully removes or excludes a tenant, or willfully interrupts essential services: the tenant may recover possession or end the agreement, and recover actual damages, punitive damages where appropriate and a reasonable attorney's fee.
