What makes a lock problem urgent

A lock problem is urgent when it leaves someone at risk or a building standing open.

• Someone at risk. A child or pet locked in a car, a person who needs care alone behind a locked door, or a stove left on: call 911 first.
• After a break-in. Call the police before touching the door; a forced frame or broken lock is part of their report. Once they have finished, the job is securing the opening, which may mean a temporary fix until the door or lock can be properly repaired.
• Weather damage. In February 2021 heavy snow and severe icing caused widespread damage across Tennessee. A door that will not lock after a fallen limb or high water, or a lockout during ice or summer heat, is urgent too.

Historic doors after damage

Where a storm or a forced entry damages a door in one of Chattanooga's four local historic districts, securing the opening and replacing the door are separate steps. A temporary repair that keeps the original door in place leaves time to talk with commission staff before anything permanent, since exterior changes there need a Certificate of Appropriateness.
