Battery or programming?

Many fobs that seem to need programming only need a battery. If the remote works next to the car but not from across a lot, or works on a mild afternoon but not on a cold morning, the coin cell is the first suspect. NOAA describes Tennessee's climate as having moderately large temperature swings, so a weak cell that copes in warm weather can fail after a cold night. If a fresh battery does not bring the fob back, or the car no longer recognizes it at all, the fob needs programming or replacement.

Rain, humidity and floods

NOAA also describes abundant precipitation, and moisture can corrode a fob's battery contacts over time. Floods are the bigger threat. In August 2021 the McEwen area of Middle Tennessee, the same grand division as Nashville, set a state record of 20.73 inches of rain in less than a day. A fob that sat in a flooded car may not recover once it dries. Keep the mechanical key blade that many fobs hold, because it can still open the driver's door when the electronics do not.

Garage and curb settings

Programming normally happens at the car, so the setting matters.

• Parking structures. Concrete and steel can shorten a fob's range, and some garages limit visitor access, so give the level and space and say whether someone needs to let a visitor in.
• Curbside. On a street, say which side the car is on and whether the driver's door can open fully without stepping into traffic.

What to bring to the car

• Every fob and key for the car, working or not. On many vehicles, adding a fob clears any that are not present, so a spare left in a drawer can stop working.
• The VIN, and the year, make and model.
• Photo ID and the registration.
