How Texas seasons wear on doors

Much lock trouble starts with the door rather than the lock. Wood doors swell and shrink with the seasons, and a bolt that once slid cleanly can start to rub the edge of its strike, so the key turns hard or the bolt stops short. NOAA's state climate summary puts typical January lows across Texas between about 20°F in the northern Panhandle and about 50°F near the mouth of the Rio Grande. In a hard cold snap, moisture inside a cylinder can turn to ice. Thaw it with lock de-icer, not hot water, which can turn back to ice inside.

A bolt that turns only when you push or pull on the door usually needs its strike adjusted, not a new lock. Forcing it bends the bolt and wears the cylinder.
