Houston had 23 city historic districts as of January 2026, among them the Heights, Norhill, Germantown, Starkweather, Lyons Avenue and Old Sixth Ward. There, lock work has to suit an old door and the city's review of exterior changes.

• Old Sixth Ward was the first Houston neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places, in 1978, and became a city historic district on June 25, 1998. As of 2007, 300 houses built between 1854 and 1935 still stood.
• Its houses run from Greek Revival five-bay cottages (1850 to 1890) through Folk Victorian and Queen Anne designs to bungalows built as late as 1940. On doors this old, lock repair usually changes less than cutting the door for new hardware.
• Glenbrook Valley, south of Sims Bayou, has 1,256 houses in 13 sections, developed from 1953 to 1962 and mostly mid-century modern ranch houses. In June 2011 City Council made it the first historic neighborhood outside Loop 610 and the first Texas historic district of post-World War II structures, so its ranch houses face the same exterior review.

Businesses and buildings

Downtown Houston's tunnel system runs about six miles, linking 95 full city blocks roughly 20 feet below the streets, from office towers to hotels, banks and the Theater District. It is generally open during weekday business hours only.

Only Wells Fargo Plaza and the McKinney Garage on Main open directly from the street into the tunnel. Elsewhere, entry is through connected buildings, so a downtown business may have doors at street and tunnel level, the lower one reachable only while its host building is open.

Car trouble in Houston

Sec. 26-93 of the Houston Code of Ordinances makes it unlawful to knowingly leave a vehicle parked on a public street, alley or other public place for more than 24 continuous hours. After a 311 request, a ParkHouston officer chalks the car and records one courtesy warning; if it has not moved when the officer returns, citations follow, and a vehicle that has not moved within 48 hours can be towed as abandoned.

If lost keys leave a car stuck at the curb, that clock keeps running, so arrange car key replacement early. An owner who believes a tow was improper can request a tow hearing with a Justice of the Peace.

Local rules worth knowing

Historic preservation, Chapter 33, Article VII of the Houston Code of Ordinances. City guidance says a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) is required for projects that would alter the exterior appearance of a designated historic property. Sec. 33-241 sets the criteria the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission applies to a COA for altering an exterior feature of a landmark or a contributing building in a historic district.

Ordinary maintenance and repair, meaning work to correct or prevent deterioration without changing the design, character, texture or material of an exterior feature, needs no COA, though other permits may apply. It does not include replacing historic material.

Ask the city's preservation staff before replacing an original front door or its visible hardware. Lock rekeying works inside the existing lock and leaves the door's exterior unchanged.
