Try the battery before programming

Most fobs run on a coin cell, and Texas weather is hard on them. NOAA's state climate summary lists 2011 as the warmest summer on record in Texas, and a fob left on a dashboard sits in a closed cabin far hotter than the air outside. Deep cold works the other way: the National Weather Service's account of the February 2021 winter outbreak shows how low temperatures went, and coin cells lose voltage as they chill. A fob that works only up close, or only on some days, often needs a fresh battery rather than programming.

Programming is for a new or replacement fob, a fob the car no longer recognizes, or dropping a lost fob from the car's memory so it can no longer open the doors.

Two kinds of fob in West Campus

West Campus towers may run the lobby, garage gate and elevator on their own building fob system. That fob belongs to the building, is set up by the property manager, and is not paired to your car. If the gate will not open but the car unlocks, call the building. If the gate opens but the car does not respond, the car's fob is the problem.

Garages and the car itself

Concrete parking garages can make a fob's signal patchy, so test it right next to the car before deciding it has lost its programming. Pairing usually needs the car on site, so arrange garage access ahead of time and note the level and space. On a street, the nearest cross street is enough.

Bring these to the programming

• every fob and key you have for the car, working or not, because many cars forget any fob that is not present during programming
• the VIN, from the dashboard or the door jamb
• the car's year, make and model, plus a photo of each side of the fob
• photo ID and the registration or title in your name
