Where keys break in Houston

A key usually snaps at its narrow neck after being forced against a lock that binds. A few Houston settings put extra strain on keys.

• Shared locks in large buildings. In the 2024 Census estimates, 22.1 percent of Houston homes, more than one in five, are in buildings with 50 or more units. Gate, lobby and mailbox locks there are turned by many residents, and a key that is a copy of a copy is cut less precisely and wears out sooner.
• Older cylinders. In Houston's historic districts, among them Germantown, Norhill and Starkweather, lock work has to suit an old door. A worn cylinder makes a key catch, and people twist harder.
• Stiff locks. A lock stiffened by grit, or by cold as in the February 2021 freeze, invites forcing. Ice in a lock calls for de-icer, never hot water.

What not to do

• Do not keep turning the stub, or push it deeper with another key.
• Do not put glue on a wire or stick to fish the piece out; glue can set inside the cylinder.
• Do not spray heavy oil into the keyway, which holds grit around the fragment.
• Do not grip a protruding piece with pliers; it can snap off flush with the keyway.

Renters and shared locks

Renting is the norm in Houston, at 59.1 percent of occupied homes. If the key broke in a gate, lobby door or mailbox, tell the property office first, since management controls those locks. In your own unit, let the landlord know as well, because a cylinder damaged by the break may need repair or replacement.

• a photo of the keyhole, showing whether any of the key is visible
• a photo of the piece you still hold
• which lock it is: deadbolt, knob, gate, mailbox or vehicle
• whether the door is locked, and whether another working key exists
• the neighborhood or cross streets and the building type
