Rule out the battery first

Most fob trouble starts with the coin cell. Heat inside a parked car and deep cold both weaken these batteries, and Houston saw the cold side in the hard freeze of February 2021. Signs of a weak cell include shorter range, pressing several times to unlock, or a dashboard message that the key is not detected. Replace the cell with the type printed on the old one before booking programming. If a fresh battery does not help, the fob may have lost its pairing with the car or been damaged.

Fobs that got wet

Flooding is a separate cause, as Harvey showed in 2017. A fob that sat in floodwater can corrode inside even after it dries and may keep failing. In that case a new fob, programmed to the car, usually makes more sense than reprogramming the old one.

Where programming happens

Programming needs the car itself, so the request should say where it sits: a driveway, a street space, or a level in a parking garage. For a garage, include the name, the level and space, and any gate code or attendant instructions. Keep the car somewhere with open air around it, and never run an engine in a closed garage, since many programming steps need the ignition on.

What to have ready

• every fob and key for the car, working or not, because on many cars programming rewrites the list of accepted fobs, and a fob left out may stop working
• the VIN, which is printed on the registration
• the year, make and model, and whether it starts with a push button
• the battery type printed on the old fob, if you have already opened it
• whether any fob was ever wet
• photo ID and the registration, to show the car is yours
