Why keys snap, and what San Antonio adds

A key usually breaks where it was already weak, at the shoulder or a deep cut, after months of serving as a handle for pulling a door shut. Some conditions add to the stress.

• Original hardware. San Antonio's design guidelines ask owners in the city's local historic districts to preserve historic doors, hardware included. A cylinder that has spent decades on an original door takes more force to turn, and that force ends up in the key.
• Cold. Typical January lows in Texas run from about 20°F in the northern Panhandle to about 50°F near the mouth of the Rio Grande. Forcing a key against a frozen lock is an easy way to snap it, so thaw the lock with de-icer instead of hot water, which can turn back to ice inside.
• Warning signs. A key that binds, sticks or needs extra force is a cue to look at lock repair before it snaps.

Renters and shared locks

If the key broke in a lock the landlord controls, report it in writing. Section 92.161 of the Texas Property Code presumes seven days is a reasonable time for a landlord to act on a security-device request. What not to do

• Do not push the broken piece deeper with the other half or a spare key.
• Do not use glue to remove the fragment; it can bond the pins and ruin the cylinder.
• Do not pry at the fragment with a knife or screwdriver, which can scratch the keyway.
• Do not keep turning the plug with part of the key inside.

• a close photo of the keyway, showing any piece that sticks out
• the broken half, if you have it
• whether the door was locked when the key snapped
• the kind of door and lock, whether it is an original one in a historic district, and whether a second working key exists
