Anyone inside changes everything

The Maricopa County Attorney's heatstroke page says heat can be fatal once a body's core temperature reaches 107 degrees, and that a child's body heats up at five times the rate of an adult's. Of 849 child deaths from vehicular heatstroke across the country between 1998 and 2019, 36 happened in Arizona. Nobody should wait on a lock call in that situation: dial 911 first and stay where you can see the child, sleeping passenger or animal.

State law addresses what a bystander may do. A.R.S. 12-558.02 protects a rescuer from a claim for civil damages when all five of its conditions apply: a good-faith belief that injury or death is imminent, a vehicle that is locked or offers no reasonable other way to remove them, a call to police, emergency medical responders or animal control before going in, no more force than the circumstances need, and staying put until those responders arrive. Separately, A.R.S. 13-2910 makes it a class 1 misdemeanor to intentionally, knowingly or recklessly leave an animal confined in a vehicle when injury or death to it is likely. When only the keys are inside

If the car is empty and only the keys are locked in, it is an annoyance, and the wait is easier in shade or a nearby building than beside the car. Say so in the request if nobody, pets included, is inside, so it is read the right way.

Naming the garage or lot

Downtown Mesa's parking site lists five garages and four customer lots by name. In any of them, the name plus the level is more useful than a street address, since one address can cover several levels. On a street, name the block and the curb you are parked at.

Location and car details

• the name of the garage or lot and the level, or the street with its nearest cross street
• which car: make, model, year and paint color
• whether the keys can be seen through the glass, and whether the motor is running
• whether a child, an adult or a pet is in the car, and whether 911 has already been told
• whether any identification or paperwork for the car is inside with the keys
