Aurora business areas and their doors

Three kinds of Aurora property show the range of doors a business or building manager looks after.

• East Colfax Avenue. Along East Colfax, the Aurora Cultural Arts District includes the 245-seat Aurora Fox. A venue like this tends to combine public entrances with back-of-house, storage and delivery doors, and each set may be keyed for different people.
• Stanley Marketplace. It opened in 2016 on the former Stanley Aviation site. If you lease space in a building like this, your own doors and the building's entrances may have different keyholders. Check the lease, or ask the property manager, which doors are yours to change.
• Apartment and condo properties. Under Aurora's Housing Code (Sec. 22-571), an owner answers for the safety of whatever part of a building the owner controls, and in a building with two or more units that includes shared areas. Turnover and who holds the keys

Staff and tenant changes drive most commercial lock work. When an employee leaves without returning keys, or a tenant moves out of a suite, rekeying the affected doors makes the old keys useless without new hardware. A master key system lets a manager open every door while each staff key opens only the doors that person needs. A simple key log, listing who holds which key and when it came back, makes the next change easier and shows at a glance which doors a missing key can open.

For a venue or shop with seasonal or part-time staff, it can make sense to limit keys to a few people and use a keypad or code for everyone else, so a departure means a code change rather than a rekey.

What to include in a request

• the business name, street address and suite number
• whether the door belongs to your space or the building, and for a building door, who approved the work
• the door type: glass storefront, metal back door, a door with a push bar, or an interior door
• how many keys are out, and whether any are unaccounted for
• when the space can be opened for the work
