Where Aurora drivers get locked out

Where the car sits in Aurora changes what a locksmith needs to know.

• Non-priority side streets. The city's 2025-2026 Snow and Ice Control Plan says non-priority residential streets get no regular winter maintenance and see snow removal only in the most extreme conditions. After a storm, a car on one of those streets may sit in packed snow and ice. Say how deep it is around the doors and whether another vehicle can pull up nearby.
• Snow emergency routes. On a signed snow emergency route (City Code Ch. 134, Art. IV), a parking ban that has taken effect stays in force until the City Manager announces its end (Sec. 134-183), and police or a Public Works designee can order a parked or stalled car off the route (Sec. 134-188). A locked car on one of those routes during a storm may be ordered moved, so put that at the top of your request. If your car is missing after a storm, check whether it was moved. • Light rail. If the car is at an R Line light rail station, such as Peoria, give the station name and say where the car is parked.

If a child, a pet or anyone who cannot get out is locked in the car, call 911 now instead of waiting for a locksmith. A closed car heats up in summer sun. In winter, if the engine is running because the car was warming up, keep snow clear of the tailpipe while you wait.

What to send with your request

• where the car is: a street address, a lot and row, or the nearest intersection
• whether a snow emergency parking prohibition is in effect on that street
• the car's make, model, year and color
• where the keys are, if you know: ignition, seat, trunk or unknown
• the kind of key: a plain key, a remote key or a push-button start fob
• photo ID with your name, and where the registration is kept
