Proof the car is yours

A replacement car key is cut to the locks and, on most cars built in recent decades, electronically paired to the vehicle, so proof of ownership comes first. Have ready:

• Photo ID.
• The registration or title in your name. If both are in the locked car or lost, say so; a copy or a replacement from your state motor-vehicle agency may be needed.
• The VIN, which is on the registration and on a plate at the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side.
• For a leased or financed car, the lease or loan paperwork if the lender holds the title.

Where the car is parked

The setting shapes the visit, so describe it.

Spares and storm season

Before a storm, pack a spare car key and a spare house key with your evacuation kit. A single remaining key, lost the week of an evacuation, can leave the car stuck in place. Once a replacement is made, consider a second key, and keep it with your evacuation documents rather than in the car.

• Year, make and model, and the key type: plain metal, transponder, remote-head or push-to-start fob.
• Whether any working key remains; copying a working key is simpler than making one when all are lost.
