Key Fob Programming in Atlanta, GA

Try the battery first

A remote or push-button key runs on a small coin-cell battery. Summers in Georgia are long, hot and humid, and a fob left in a cupholder or on the dash of a parked car sits far hotter than the air outside, which shortens coin-cell life. When a fob's range shrinks, or it works only on the second or third press, fit a fresh battery of the right size before assuming it needs programming.

A fob that got wet in a pocket or bag should be opened, dried and given a new battery before anyone calls it dead.

Car fob or building fob?

Big buildings are common here: in 2024 Census Bureau estimates, 36.4 percent of Atlanta's housing units are in buildings of 50 or more units. Residents of Buckhead towers and Castleberry Hill lofts may carry two fobs on one ring: one for the building's garage gate and lobby, and one for the car. The building fob comes from management; the car fob is what programming covers. So if the garage gate stays shut, ask management; if the car will not unlock or start, it is a battery or programming question.

Say where the car is parked: a building garage (and whether a visitor can get in), a street space or a driveway.

What to have ready

For key fob programming, bring:

• every working fob and key for the car, because on some vehicles programming a new fob erases any fob that is not present
• the fob that stopped working, even if it seems dead
• the registration, which shows the VIN, and a photo ID
• the make, model and year, and whether the car has push-button start
